In 1897 August Dietz, Franklin Sterns, Jr., and Franklin L. Kerns formed the Virginia Philatelic Publishing Company. In September the firm started a new philatelic publication, the Virginia Philatelist (VP) with Dietz as editor. The new journal set as one of its primary goals to bring philatelic news to the hundreds of collectors in Virginia. This was to be in the form of both news and in depth stories on stamps from around the world. The prospectus for the new journal also included the following: “The Virginia Philatelist opens for the Collector and Dealer a wide field for the purchase and exchange of the Stamps of the Confederacy, circulating as it will among Collectors of a State the Capitol of which was the seat of the Confederate States Government.” Beginning with the first issue the pages of the VP included information on the field of Confederate stamps and covers.
Dietz continued as editor through the August 1900 issue when he retired and transferred his interest in the Virginia Philatelic Printing Company to Royal B. Bradley. The VP continued publication under the editorship of Bradley through at least early 1905, but with considerably less Confederate content.
In 1901 Dietz started his own printing business, the Dietz Printing Company, in Richmond, Virginia

Notes:
- There may have been a second edition of the first issue as there exists an image of that cover with “Second Edition” at the bottom. However, it is not believed there was any difference in content.
- Whole numbers were not used until volume 6, issue 1.
- Volume numbers on the covers of the March and April 1901 issues are V instead of IV.
