US Postage Used After Secession

U.S. Postage Used on Covers After Secession

U.S. 3¢ rose-brown stamps on legal-sized envelope postmarked VICKSBURG/MISS on FEB/21 (1861). Four stamps paid 12¢ rate for an overweight cover transmitting legal documents to a Justice of the Peace. Docketing in ink indicates that the cover was “opened by consent/March 2nd 1861.” Stamps were canceled with a 4-ring-target killer.
U.S. 3¢ red star-die stamped envelope canceled with a grid? killer postmarked VICKSBURG/MISS on MAR/25 (1861). Docketing in ink indicates that the letter was dated “Vix. Mch 25/61.”
U.S. 3¢ dull red stamp on advertising cover postmarked VICKSBURG/MISS on APR/6 (1861). Stamp was canceled with “segmented” grid killer. Corner card was for William McCutcheon & Co. – Produce, Groceries & Commission Merchants at Vicksburg.
U.S. 3¢ dull red stamp on cover postmarked VICKSBURG/MISS on APR/27 (1861). Stamp was canceled with a “segmented” grid killer.
